At the AGM on 4 July 2017 members unanimously voted to change the name of the society from Richmond & District Decorative and Fine Arts Society to THE ARTS SOCIETY RICHMOND.
This reflects NADFAS’s new trading name which is THE ARTS SOCIETY.
We have a new website at www.theartssocietyrichmond.org so this website for Richmond DFAS will no longer be updated. Please refer to the new website.
This is just to confirm two dates. The Teddington Village Fair is on Sunday 25 June 2017 and the lunch party that Jenny and Richard Lebus are hosting is on Sunday 2 July 2017.
We are starting a new Church Recording group to record all the treasures, furnishings and artefacts at St Mary with St Alban Church in Ferry Road, Teddington TW11 9NN which is at the river end of the High Street, near Teddington Lock. Several bus routes stop nearby and we may be able to arrange car shares.
Once we get going, probably in September 2017, the group will meet for about 3 hours once a month but it’s very flexible and attendance is of course not needed every month. No experience or expertise is required, just interest and enthusiasm. Training will be provided by NADFAS which will be useful.
We all love Richmond DFAS and we hope that you will consider giving some of your time to this exciting project. It is the only Church Recording project in the London area being undertaken at present.
Please would you email Sue Stevens by Sunday 7th May to tell her whether you are interested in joining the group. Her email address is firstname.lastname@example.org.
It should be fun.
Richmond and Twickenham Photographic Society is holding its Annual Exhibition at the Landmark Arts Centre, Ferry Road, Teddington TW11 9NN on 5-17 April 2017. Open 10.30am to 5.30pm daily, entrance £2.
There will be hundreds of prints to view as well as projected digital images from members of the Photographic Society. There will also be very imaginative ‘A’ level work from the girls from St. Catherines’ School and wonderful prints from the Royal Photographic Society’s Visual Arts Group.
Well worth a visit.
It is with great sadness that we report the death of NADFAS lecturer, Eric Shanes, after a long illness. Eric was to have given our July 2017 lecture on the Life and Works of J.M.W. Turner and he will be sorely missed. We are now seeking a replacement lecturer for the July lecture whose name we will announce in due course.
After the lull of January we have been really busy this month. More than a hundred members (a record) attended the lecture on Nickolas Pevsner and the Buildings of England at the beginning of February. It was very well presented by Susie Harries who did a great job in concentrating on buildings in Surrey.
On 10 February we held our second New Members’ Drinks Party which is a great way for new members to get to know the Committee and other new members.
Over 40 members attended the Captain Cook study day on 17 February.
40 visited the Courtauld Gallery on 24 February and a further 40 visited Westminster Abbey on 25 February for a private guided tour with singing by the Purcell Club.
We continue to offer a very full programme of events and we look forward to welcoming guests and new members to our next lecture which is on Tuesday 7 March, drinks at 7pm, one-hour lecture at 8pm. The lecture will be on Dutch and English Delft.
The Committee of Richmond DFAS wishes all members and their families a very happy Christmas. We look forward to seeing you in the New Year. With very best regards from “The Committee”.
The October lecture is our annual “Bring a Friend Free” lecture.
Everybody is very welcome to join us for free on 4th October 2016 at Duke Street Church, Richmond TW9 1DH. Drinks at 7pm, one-hour lecture at 8pm. The title of the talk is “Romans and Romantics – The Guildhall Art Gallery, London’s real hidden gem”. See you there.
Our New Members Drinks Party will be held on Friday 14th October 2016. This is first such party that we have ever held and we hope that it will be a feature of our calendar of events in future years.
As we had start somewhere, we have invited the first 50 members who have joined since June 2015.
